Amanda grew up in Norwich, VT before going on to get her nursing degree at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She practiced as a registered nurse in the neonatal ICU for 6 years in Boston, and returned to graduate school at Boston College to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. After a brief stint enjoying the mountains of Jackson Hole, she moved back to Vermont, settling in Montpelier with her dog, Toby.
Susan Farrell received her nursing degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979 and her Master's /Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. She moved from her home state of Pennsylvania to the Upper Valley in 1986. She taught in the RN program at NH Technical College in Claremont, NH and worked at DHMC in pediatrics and on the birthing pavilion. She joined Upper Valley Pediatrics in 1993. In addition to working part time in the E.Thetford office, she has been the school nurse at Thetford Academy since 2007.
Kari McKinley grew up in the Adirondacks in upstate New York. From there she traveled north to Montreal, Canada where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology from McGill University, with a focus in laboratory research in developmental genetics. Upon completion of her program, Kari moved back to the US to Burlington, VT where she spent a couple of years working as a medical assistant at a pediatric primary care clinic. While she loved fundamental science, it was working with children and their families that gave her the most fulfillment. Kari went on to complete an accelerated RN to Master of Science in Nursing program at Yale University in New Haven, CT. She returned to Vermont as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and joined Upper Valley Pediatrics in June 2013. Kari is thrilled to be working with such a wonderful group and has felt at home at UVP from the start. Her other interests include telemark skiing, knitting, road biking, dancing, outdoor adventures, spending time with family and friends, and trying new activities.
Molly Stone graduated from the University of Vermont in 2006 and has been employed by the University’s Extension Program since 2007. She has worked with UVM Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, 4-H, and Operation: Military Kids Vermont. Molly received her Certification as a Lactation Counselor from Healthy Children’s-Center for Breastfeeding in 2010. She offers support to breastfeeding moms and their families. Basic breastfeeding issues can usually be solved within a few visits. More complicated cases are referred out to local IBCLC’s. She loves to advocate for breastfeeding out in the community as well! As a Nutrition Counselor at UVP, Molly helps patients and their families navigate the world of healthy eating. Together, we come up with an individualized pattern of eating and work at putting it into practice over the course of several weeks.
Dalene Washburn joined UVP in 1997. She graduated from University of Washington in Seattle in 1982 with a BSW and from Boston University in 1984 with a MSW. Dalene enjoys providing child and family therapy. She believes in the precious nature of childhood. She likes the wholistic approach to mental health care at UVP. Her experience includes working to reduce trauma, anxiety and depression. She also has 21 years of working with adoption and guardianship related issues. In addition to her clinical work at UVP, Dalene has a private practice in Woodstock VT. She lives in Woodstock and enjoys spending time in nature. She likes to practice yoga and Zumba
Bob Claflin has been working at Upper Valley Pediatrics since 1999. He is a graduate of the University of Miami and Plymouth State University Graduate Counseling Program. Bob works with all age groups. He primarily works with children and adolescents that have ADHD, Depression, Anxiety and grief due to major loss. Much of Bob's work he describes as normal development issues that our children and families are faced with in today's changing and demanding world. Bob has lots of experience working with clients and their families, and will emphasize the importance of good communication. Bob grew up in a military family and lived in many parts of the world. He has lived an active life. After graduating from Miami, he played soccer in Europe. He did marathon running as well as a number of triathalons. He has studies a lot about nutrition. He plays the drums, chess and shares an art studio that he uses when working with children and adolescents. Bob is married to Ann and they have three grown children.
Kathy Schiffman, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, received her Bachelors Degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1983 and her Masters Degree from Antioch New England Graduate School in 1988. She has worked as both a school counselor in elementary and high schools as well as in a clinic setting. Kathy has experience helping children and families with a variety of issues including depression, anxiety and trauma. Kathy has been with Upper Valley Pediatrics since 2008 and has worked in the Upper Valley for the past 20 years. Kathy and her husband live in Haverhill.
Nathan Old has worked with UVP as a youth mentor since 2012. "When I interviewed for the position my jaw dropped as I thought to myself, 'You mean you'll pay me to do what I am already doing AND I get to fish, hike, and play sports all day? Sign me up!'" Originally from Kansas, Nathan moved to the Upper Valley in 2004 to intern at a local church following his completion of a religious training course. When his intern period was finished, the beauty of the area and its people drew him to make Piermont, NH his home. Since that time he has worked at a local dairy farm while also working with youth both through area schools and area churches. "My favorite part about being with young people is the opportunity to introduce new interests and to show them that everything they need for fun, adventure, and success in life is right in their own back yards. Life is what you choose to make of it."
